Adorably nicknamed the “chunky” bench, this project was actually designed and built in collaboration with our client. He had a specific taste for very thick wooden pieces, similar to old Chinese and Japanese temples, and was looking to replace an old shoe bench. However, he was unable to source one that could fit his small living spaces as most retailers selling such thick pieces would reserve them for benches at least 1.2m long.

Hence, he approached us and wanted us to teach him how to build his dream bench. After confirming the design, he sourced his own lumber and brought it to us for inspection. Upon which, we did our prep work and got started with his own custom workshop.

The bench is designed with a wedged mortise and tenon to ensure its stability over the long term. Typically an advanced joinery, our client was quick to pick it up and built this bench over 4 4-hour sessions, a challenging feat, especially for a beginner like him with no prior experience.
